The following announcement was published today on the Patient Ombudsman's website:

One important area prioritized by the Patient Ombudsman is the improvement of the situation of psychiatric patients, including those who are incapacitated and their caregivers, who often do not know either who their attorney is or where to seek help.

The Patient Ombudsman has analyzed the availability of attorneys for incapacitated patients in psychiatric wards. Attorneys are tasked with representing patients
in matters related to proceedings before the guardianship court, in connection with admission or detention in a psychiatric hospital against their will.

After analyzing data from selected health care providers across the country where 24-hour psychiatric care services are provided, difficulties have been found in the availability of designated attorneys-in-charge for patients. The reasons for this situation may stem from a number of systemic conditions that are worth improving. The Patient Ombudsman has therefore worked with the Supreme Council of Attorneys and the National Council of Legal Advisors to identify and analyze the reasons behind the problems and develop effective solutions to support patients.
