WHO: COVID-19 infections on the rise

Worldwide, the number of new cases increased by 4 percent in the 28-day period from December 11, 2023 to January 7, 2024, compared to the previous 28-day period. It amounted to more than 1.1 million new cases, the World Health Organization reports. The number of deaths, on the other hand, fell by 26 percent during the period.

Between December 11, 2023 and January 7, 2024, the number of new hospitalizations and intensive care unit admissions due to COVID-19 saw an overall increase of 40 percent and 13 percent, respectively, while the number of admissions exceeded 173,000 and 1,900, respectively.
The most prevalent coronavirus variant in the world today is JN.1. It is already present in 71 countries and accounted for about 66 percent of the sequence in the 52nd week of last year, compared to 25 percent in the 48th week. This variant often causes atypical symptoms, such as anxiety and sleep disorders.
