A new, comprehensive approach to assessing a patient with AD
Published April 7, 2022 11:41
The heterogeneity of AD contributes to challenges in the diagnosis and assessment of disease activity and the selection of pharmacotherapy.
In response to these challenges, an innovative system for standardizing the assessment and course of AD and treatment optimization was developed. The DESCRIBE-AD classification proposed by R. Chovatiy and J. Silverberg, published in JAAD [1] , will help to effectively capture the clinical domains contributing to the heterogeneity of this disease and, most importantly, takes into account both the clinician's and patient's perspective.
The DESCRIBE-AD (AZS) classification consists of:
- d ermatitis (dermatitis), i.e. the assessment of the morphology and phenotype of dermatitis,
- e disease trend over time
- s defines the severity of the somatic symptoms present in this disease, among others . intelligence, occurrence
- c companion horrors (atopic and non-atopic),
- r response to therapy,
- and the intensity of the skin symptoms,
- b disease-related ariers, and e expansion, distribution of skin lesions.
Instead of focusing on any single aspect of AD, the DESCRIBE-AD classification allows for a comprehensive approach to patient assessment and the development of clinical management based on a joint, partnership decision of the physician and the patient.
This approach is especially important for adult patients with AD, because despite the common opinion, AD is not only a pediatric disease.
The issue of AD in adults will be devoted to the RAD conference - Revolutionizing Atopic Dermatitis , the only such event devoted exclusively to atopic dermatitis. The conference will be held April 9-11 in Baltimore, Maryland and online. The chairman of the conference, prof. Jonathan Silverberg will present the latest reports on pathophysiology, dermatoepidemiology and treatment of AD in adults. Remote patient participation in the conference is free of charge .
