Medexpress: In your clinic, among other things, you operate on patients with rare diseases, including hypophosphatasia. The disease is associated with tremendous pain. Can this pain be stopped?
Prof. Dawid Larysz, head of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery for Children and Adolescents at WSSD in Olsztyn: It all depends on what the origin of this pain is. Let's remember that pain is a symptom. We can remove tumors, disorders, such as in the case of hypophosphatasia abnormal bone structure, dysplastic issues or abnormal structure, let's say of the skull or spine, compression of bone structures on the nerve structures that conduct pain, on the other hand in hyopophosphatasia comes targeted therapy, when by using these modern treatments we are able to stop the disease, make it not progress. Therefore, the treatment of these people, in the context of not only the removal of pain, but the function of our body (I deal with surgery of the head and neck, one of the most important parts of our body), is a combined treatment, by means of chemotherapy, targeted therapies, surgery, which is able to make the quality of life of these patients as good as possible.
