On Thursday (October 27), professor Maciej Wróbel, head of the Department of Otolaryngology and Laryngological Oncology of the Jurasz Hospital, together with a team of specialists, performed the first in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship and one of the first in Poland implantation of an innovative hearing implant with piezoelectric. The solution is made of an active element that surgeons implant under the skin in the ear structures. The source of vibrations in the implant is a piezoelectric transducer. Thanks to its use, the implants are characterized by very good sound quality and high reliability.
The active bone implant system additionally consists of a miniature sound processor - the outer part, hidden between the patient's hair. It is the sound processor that adequately processes the information and converts it into a digital signal.
- This device combines technology known from cochlear implants and bone conduction implants. The new device differs significantly from the previously used solutions in such cases. It provides excellent sound quality, and at the same time is devoid of any element passing through the skin. It is therefore characterized by high aesthetics, and the risk of infection in the vicinity of the implant is kept to a minimum - informs Prof. Maciej Wróbel.
The Active Bone Implant System is intended for patients with conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss and unilateral sensorineural deafness, but it can also be used in patients referred for bilateral surgery.
- More and more people struggle with hearing loss problems, which is why the new treatment method offered in our Clinic will be a chance for patients to return to the world of sounds, thanks to which patients will not be condemned to living in silence - adds Prof. The sparrow.
Treatment of hearing disorders with this type of implant is fully reimbursed by the National Health Fund.
