The ECIRS procedure, consisting in the removal of kidney stones with the simultaneous use of two endoscopes - inserted through the urethra and through the kidney puncture, was performed on a patient with complicated nephrolithiasis. Although this innovative procedure is already well known, it was the first time in Poland that it was carried out with the use of the Avicenna robotic system.

- This is a breakthrough in the treatment of kidney stones - says prof. Piotr Radziszewski, head of the Department and Clinic of General, Oncological and Functional Urology of the Medical University of Warsaw, who joined the urology team that carried out the operation.

The robot allows for much greater precision in operating a flexible ureterorenoscope inserted into the kidney through the ureter. The operator controls the operation of the ureterorenoscope with joysticks, and the device corrects undesirable movements, such as twitching of the hand. This significantly increases the safety of the laser removal of kidney stones. The use of the Avicenna robot allows the crushing of deposits up to 4 cm in size.

Robotics is used in urology to an increasing extent. Since this year, prostate cancer surgery using the Da Vinci robot has been reimbursed.
