The increase in the total number of cancer cases detected last year is higher than usual. In 2022, 38,265 new cancer cases will be diagnosed in Norway. According to the Cancer Registry, the reason for the increase in cases detected in 2022 may also be due to restrictions on the availability of health services during the pandemic.
For example, during the pandemic restrictions, the mammography program was temporarily suspended. Of all cancers, prostate cancer had the highest number of cases. In 2022, 5474 new cases of this cancer were diagnosed in men.
In second place is breast cancer in women with 4224 cases. The good news is that fewer cases of lung cancer are being reported. In 2022, a total of 3534 men and women developed lung cancer. Lung cancer still affects many elderly people, but the peak incidence in men was between 2000 and 2010, and in women in 2018.
