The WHO cancer research agency says aspartame is a possible source of carcinogens. A ruling on the matter is likely to be floated next month.

The IARC's ruling, is prepared throughout June after a meeting of outside eskperts, and is intended to assess the potential risk, based on the evidence gathered and the results of the study.

However, the document does not take into account how much of the product a person can safely consume. This advice to individuals comes from a separate WHO expert committee on food additives, known as EFCA (the Joint Expert Committee of WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization on Food Additives), along with the findings of national regulators. The EFCA has taken the position since 1981 that aspartame is safe to consume unless one exceeds the allowable amount of aspartame intake per day. This limit is 40mg per kilogram of body weight.

The official position is expected to be known by July 14. However, food producers are already full of concern. Earlier IARC reports have led to specific changes, or court proceedings if none.
